FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Online Card Application

Can I apply for a library card online?

Yes, you can sign up for a San Francisco Public Library card on the web. To check out material you will need to upgrade to a full-access card.

How do I upgrade to a full-access library card?

It's easy! After you fill out the online application, you will receive a receipt with your new SFPL Card number. Print your receipt and bring a picture identification and proof of your current address in the form of postmarked mail, bills, or a lease to any San Francisco Public Library location and we will be glad to upgrade your card. Children 12 years old and younger, and teens without ID’s will need to have a parent or guardian sign their confirmation form and bring that with them to the library.

Remember - staff will not be able to upgrade to a full-access library card without proper identification.

Do I have to complete the application process at a library location?

Yes, for identity purposes, the application process must be completed at a library location. Applications cannot be accepted by mail, e-mail or fax. [San Francisco residents who are homebound (PDF) may apply for library cards by mail.]
