Heat Wave
by Vicki I. Mac
We are
Living in the city
Running along the
Sidewalk's edge
Avoiding one another
Look-
Close ahead
The elderly teenager
With a cigarette
A guitar
And one backpack
Searching for shade
Under the heat
Finding his own
Dark comer
Crossing paths
The silence
Of eye contact
Pity, difference
But
We
Walk free
Not knowing
The grips of poverty
They
Fall, picking up
Our worn change
Not knowing
The possibilities
We walk
On ground
Trying to find
Heaven on Earth
And today
All of us
Feel this heat
Upon our faces
(And sweat)
Under this one blue sky
