San Francisco - In association with the June 18 opening of the James C. Hormel Gay & Lesbian Center’s ten year anniversary exhibition in the Main Library’s Jewett Gallery and James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center and the Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial Branch Library, a series of special programs be presented June 18 through October 1, 2005.

These programs will feature local and national figures including authors, artists, historians and activists discussing topics related to holdings in the Hormel Center. Programs include: readings from unpublished material in the Hormel archives, a panel on lesbian publishing, a discussion of Gay Games and GLBT sports history in collaboration with the GLBT Historical Society, and a BAVC and LYRIC co-produced short video featuring the voices of queer youth in response to the Out at the Library exhibition.

    Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals: Curating Invisible History - Ted Phillips, Deputy Director of Exhibitions at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, talks passionately about his personal and professional journey in the process of curating the Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945 exhibition.

    Lesbian Publishers: A Historical Perspective and a Current View - Join lesbian publishers Carol Seajay, Barbara Grier, Renate Stendhal, Frederique Delacoste and Joan Pinkvoss in conversation about pulp romance novels, publishing as a political activity; and the past, present and future trends in lesbian publishing.

    Lesbian Pulp Fiction: The Sexually Intrepid World of Lesbian Paperback Novels 1950 – 1965. - Katherine Forrest, author of Lesbian Pulp Fiction, discusses the history of lesbian writing with Ann Bannon and other authors.

    Home Team: The Growth of Gay Games and GLBT Sports - Sports writer and curator Jim Provenzano in conversation with athletes and sports activists discussing LGBT sports history from the Gay Games to now. Co-sponsored by the GLBT Historical Society.

    Not in Our Town Northern California: When Hate Happens Here - A screening and presentation by the filmmakers. This new documentary examines the negative effects of intolerance and explores five stories of communities in Northern California who have found creative and effective ways to fight hate. Featuring the Library’s Reversing Vandalism exhibition. Co-sponsored by The Working Group and KQED.

    Hidden Secrets & Lost Treasures: Readings from the Hormel Center Archives - Bay Area authors read from unpublished works and little known literary and historical writings from the Hormel Center Archives.

    Queer Youth Speak: In and Out at the Library - Produced by BAVC and LYRIC this short video features the voices of queer youth in response to the Out at the Library exhibition. Screening followed by youth panel discussion.
