One City One Book: San Francisco Reads
Kicks Off Fall 2007 Events

Author readings, book discussions,
school visits highlight events line-up

A provocative novel about four generations of women living in Louisiana will be the focus of numerous special programs being held this fall in support of this year’s One City One Book: San Francisco Reads program.

Bay Area author Lalita Tademy brings to life four vivid and remarkable women in her family, beginning in slavery, sweeping through the Civil War and into the pre-Civil Rights South. As we follow these four women through extraordinary hardship, we see how they learn to empower themselves, get their due and preserve their heritage despite overwhelming pressures. Set on a Creole plantation on the banks of Louisiana’s Cane River, this New York Times best seller is a beautifully written slice of American history never before seen in such piercing and personal detail.

Tademy will read and discuss Cane River at numerous locations around San Francisco, including talks at the Ocean View Branch on Sept. 22 and the Mission Bay Branch on Oct. 27; a conversation with KQED’s Scott Shafer on Oct. 23; and visits to the Books Inc., Book Passage, Stacey’s and Barnes & Noble bookstores. She will also visit local high schools and community organizations.

Books are available in libraries and local bookstores. Program guides and bookmarks are available at all San Francisco Public Library locations and at participating bookstores. Cane River is available at the Library in paperback, large print, audio CD and audiocassette formats. It is also available in Chinese and Spanish.

One City One Book is sponsored by Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, the Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation and the Alexander M. & June L. Maisin Foundation. Media sponsors are KPIX CBS 5, ClearChannel Radio, San Francisco Examiner, KGO-AM and SF Weekly. Bookstore sponsors include Books Inc., Book Passage, Stacey’s Bookstore, Barnes & Noble, Green Apple Books, City Lights and Borders Books.

All programs are free and open to the public.

Launched in 2005, One City One Book is a citywide reading initiative developed to encourage all residents to read and discuss the same book. Readings and discussion groups will be held at various libraries and bookstores throughout San Francisco to inspire conversation about the book.
