Bay Area Libraries Celebrate
National Library Week, April 2 – 8

In celebration of National Library Week, April 2–8, San Francisco Public Library and the Bay Area Library and Information System (BALIS) , a consortium of local libraries, is launching a multi-media campaign to highlight the contributions of libraries to the community and encourage even greater library usage using the campaign theme, “Your library card. Get it…Use it.”

The campaign, which will run during the month of April, will include colorful signs on more than 180 buses, public service announcements on Bay Area radio stations, and movie ads and trailers on over 100 theater screens throughout the Bay Area.

Bay Area libraries continue to attract visitors in record numbers. Last year, there were more than 17.5 million visits to the public libraries serving Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties. In addition, over 23.5 million books, videos, audio books, CDs, DVDs and other items were loaned to Bay Area library customers. San Francisco’s libraries received more than 6.5 million visitors and loaned 7.3 million items last year.

Bay Area residents continue to utilize libraries for free Internet access as well. Last year, the Bay Area libraries’ 1,200-plus Internet terminals provided library users with more than 225,000 hours of free high-speed Internet access. San Francisco library patrons spent close to 1,500 hours per day on the Internet last year.

Additionally, Bay Area libraries continue to be the place to go for book clubs, summer reading programs for teens, concerts, story times for children and much, much more. Over 7,000 programs and events for children, teens and adults were held at San Francisco’s libraries last year.

Members of BALIS include San Francisco Public Library, the Alameda Free Library, Alameda County Library, Berkeley Public Library, Contra Costa County Library, Hayward Public Library, Livermore Public Library, Oakland Public Library and Pleasanton Public Library.
