San Francisco Public Library presents

Kalligraphia Ten

An Exhibition by Members of the Friends of Calligraphy
June 1-July 31, 2003—Skylight Gallery, Sixth Floor

San Francisco - The San Francisco Public Library in collaboration with The Friends of Calligraphy are pleased to present Kalligraphia Ten. The exhibition is held every three years and the works submitted for display demonstrate a range of contemporary calligraphic practices, from the traditional to more experimental methods using letter forms as a means for artistic expression. All levels of accomplishment, from student to amateur and professional works are represented in Kalligraphia Ten.

In addition to the exhibition, demonstrations of calligraphy will take place every Saturday in June and July from 2:00- 4:00p.m. in the Latino-Hispanic Community Meeting Room at the San Francisco Public Library. The public is welcome to attend and learn more about this amazing art form by noted Bay Area calligraphers. “The pieces displayed in the exhibition truly illustrate how words can be made into expressive works of art,” said Susie Taylor, Curator, Book Arts and Special Collections.

One of the most dramatically displayed pieces in the exhibition is a collaborative installation by Thomas Ingmire, Betsy Raymond and Kazumi Atsuta titled Words of Peace. Hanging lanterns written by more than 750 people from nineteen nations symbolize the desire to bring light into a world that now seems so complex and dark. The public can contribute to this on-going plea for peace by signing the Library’s visitor book or visiting www.wordsforpeace.org.

Kalligraphia Ten will be housed in the San Francisco Public Library’s Skylight Gallery, sixth floor, through July 31, 2003.
