The Hidden World of Caves:
Caves of the Guadalupe Mountains
Exhibition Opens March 6 at SF Main Library's Jewett Gallery
"The Hidden World of Caves," an exhibition of color and black and white photographs of the spectacular caves
in the Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico and West Texas, opens Thursday,
March 6 and will be on view through May 18, 2003 in the San Francisco
Main Library's Jewett Gallery, 100 Larkin Street (at Grove), San Francisco.
The photographs, taken by Stuart Kogod, Michael Queen and Jack Soman - who work
together as Karst Features - capture some of the most beautiful, oldest,
largest and scientifically significant caves in the world, including
the world-renowned Carlsbad Cavern. The photographs reveal a place
of discovery, adventure, and enchantment. Some were taken from well-maintained
trails; others are from places that require long hikes, technical climbs,
special skills and permits to reach.
Gallery visitors will have a chance to meet the three photographers during an
opening night reception on March 6 from 5:30-6:30 in the Latino/Hispanic
Community Meeting Room across from the Gallery. Then, at 6:30 p.m.
in the Main Library's Koret Auditorium, local cave experts Ann and
Peter Bosted will present an illustrated lecture about Caving in California,
including where to go and what to expect when you get there.
All programs at the San Francisco Public Library are free and open to the public. "The Hidden World of Caves" exhibition was organized by Karst Features and the San Francisco Public Library.
The Friends & Foundation of the San Francisco Public Library provided funding.
The Jewett Gallery is open during regular Library hours: Sunday 12-5; Monday 10-6;
Tuesday through Thursday 9-8; Friday 12-5; and Saturday 10-6.
