Brian Bannon will join San Francisco Public Library on Aug. 14 as the system’s new chief of branches. In this capacity, Bannon will be responsible for managing the Library’s 27 branches and their staff,
preparing branches for closure for renovation, keeping the public informed about the Branch Library Improvement Program, and identifying and meeting the needs of the community, among others.
Bannon hails from the Seattle Public Library system, where he has worked in various positions for the past six years. While at Seattle Public Library, Bannon oversaw a system-wide program that brought public
computing classes in five languages to neighborhood libraries; opened the new Delridge and Capitol Hill branches; and fostered a formal partnership with the University of Washington’s iSchool to make Seattle
Public Library a demonstration site for ongoing research and service evaluation.
Prior to his service with Seattle Public Library, Bannon served as assistant coordinator and trainer for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he helped design and implement a $9.6 million Tribal
Library Grant Program bringing 803 computers, training and support to 43 tribes living in the Southwest.
Bannon holds a bachelor’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Gay & Lesbian Studies and Organizational Psychology, and a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington.
