Becoming Visible

If it sounds too quaint to say that beauty has its genesis in pain and tragedy, that’s only because it’s so often true. With that in mind, I volunteer my vision for the Reversing Vandalism project. I was given a mutilated book of narratives of gay and lesbian youths, called Becoming Visible, and set about creating an art quilt with that title as the theme. The quilt is a collage of various colors, textures and fragmented forms that leave abstract impressions with the viewer. But out of this abstraction comes the clear image of a veil, lightening both the color and thickness towards the bottom, as the title words and images from the book’s cover are revealed, conveying, as the book did, that confusion can ultimately be a path to self knowledge, and pain a precursor of liberation.
