Hawaiian Totem

I received my book for this project at the end of August. One week later I left for a month’s vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii. One day during a walk on the beach, I picked up some interesting pieces of palm bark and began to paint them. Suddenly the ideas began to flow:

“palm bark...palm trees...Hawaiian palm weaving… painted palm…painted paper… painted book pages…collage??no, too common...Hawaiian crafts...back to weaving... Hawaiian culture...”

When I returned home Hawaiian Totem was born from the soul of a damaged book.
