The Reversing Vandalism project gave me a chance to use art as a weapon. Altering a book
into a thing of beauty, interest and humor seems to just reply to the attempt to destroy the
original work. Gay New York is a fascinating read—it was difficult to put the book down
in order to begin work and George Chauncey is to be lauded for his work. The book was
a wonderful base from which to work. While I wanted to include layouts that addressed
issues seriously, I also wanted to include the gritty and the glamorous, for that is how I see
New York.
