Branch Library Improvement Program NORTH BEACH BRANCH CONSTRUCTION |
|||||||||||||
|
In November 2000, the voters passed a bond measure for $106 million to upgrade San Francisco’s branch library system and in November 2007, the voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition D authorizing additional funding to improve the branches. On March 1, 2007, the San Francisco Library Commission considered the overall Branch Library Improvement Program and voted to change the budget, schedule, and scope of several projects, including the North Beach branch. The North Beach project budget was increased from $3.7 million to between $7.6 - $8.4 million and its scope went from a renovation to a brand new building. A Master Planning process for the park, in conjunction with the Recreation & Park Department, has begun. The goal of the Master Planning for the library is to decide where in the park the new larger library should be located within the Joe DiMaggio Playground area. The firm of Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects has been hired to facilitate the Master Planning process and develop site alternatives and library conceptual designs. The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library are raising funds from private donations for new furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the branch library.
