Library Citizens Advisory Committee Minutes Final Wednesday, April 18 th 2007 6:00 PM San Francisco City Hall 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place Room 278 I. Call to Order and Roll The meeting was called to order at 6:12 Present: Enne Braun, Sue Cauthen, Lucille Cuttler, Maryam Daryabegi-Farhang (arrives at 6:18; departs at 7:49), Roger Kallen, Rachelle Resnick, Douglas Ryan (arrives at 6:23), Jenny Situ, Gladys Soto, Peter Warfield, Daniel Weaver. Absent: Nanette Duffy, Booh Edouardo, Carol Kocivar, Richard Mason, Janis Seeman, Mark Vogel. Bonnie Eslinger representing as San Francisco Examiner City Hall and SFPL reporter arrived at 7:04 pm and left at 8:02 pm. II. Volunteer for minutes: Jenny Situ III. Public Comment: none IV. Successful Teens and Every Child Ready to Read program (6:14) LCAC members discussed these 2 SFPL major initiatives. Library’s money for the teen programs i.e. free SAT courses, free gardening classes, etc. include a total of 260 more programs for teenagers; although activities are held at limited sites. It was mentioned that actual results were hard to see, between the old and the new money spent for the teenagers’ programs. There were fewer people going into the libraries physically this year compare to last. What are the goals of the Successful Teens program? How can performance be measured? V. Report of the chair and vice chair Dan’s annual report from fiscal year: all motions that passed to supervisors. Peter suggests that we make it up as a body (LCAC) rather than just Dan alone, but there were complications last year. Sue reported on the controller study; library scored a “B-”, libraries in districts 2, 5 and 10 are least likely to be used. Some District 2 and 5 branch libraries are currently closed for remodeling. It would be a danger to libraries’ funding if we can’t get people to support the set-aside initiative. VI. Bonnie Eslinger Bonnie Eslinger is an Examiner reporter who has written articles about the SF libraries. She relies on people to educate her. There are about a handful of people working in the Examiner to keep San Franciscans up to date about news in our local area. She previously reported on education matters. She works separately from the editorial department. She takes and gets source materials and any flyers she can get a hold of, “the more information the better”. VII. Member comments and suggestions Peter was willing to give and suggested to give a presentation upon our library system vs. others systems. VIII. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 8:14pm |
