Portola Branch Library History

Portola Branch Library was the 14th branch established in the San Francisco Public Library system. Initially the Portola district was served by a “library station.” Among the locations of the station were 2550 and later 2592 San Bruno Avenue. For over 40 years, the Portola Branch was located in leased space at 2434 San Bruno Avenue. In October 1995, the branch relocated one-half block south to a different leased facility at the corner of San Bruno Avenue and Silliman Street; this location is on the ground level of a three-floor medical-dental building, in the space formerly occupied by the Golden State Pharmacy. This building may be readily identified by the small, light-blue tiles on its exterior.
