Glen Park Branch Library History

There has been a branch of the San Francisco Public Library in the Glen Park neighborhood for over 70 years, in a number of different, leased locations. Glen Park Branch Library was the 12th branch established in the San Francisco Public Library system, having first been opened in January 1927, at 700 Bosworth Street. The branch was located at that site for almost 38 years, until the building that housed it was demolished during construction of Interstate 280. Glen Park Branch was then relocated to 2909 Diamond Street, just south of Bosworth. The branch was housed at that site for five years until it was once again displaced by construction, this time of the Glen Park BART station; the Diamond Street steps to the BART plaza stand where the Branch was once located. The Branch was next moved down the street to 2842 Diamond at Kern Street. After nine years, in 1978, the Branch was relocated to a leased location at 653 Chenery Street and closed on August 25, 2007.

The current location of Glen Park Branch Library is in a new building at 2825 Diamond Street. The branch opened on October 13, 2007 and became the sixth branch to be renovated through the Branch Library Improvement Program, the November 2000 ballot measure resoundingly passed by the voters of San Francisco.
