Strategic Plan

Strategic Plan 2003 - 2006

Strategic Planning Process

The San Francisco Public Library has implemented a strategic planning process to prepare a three-year strategic plan based on the “New Planning for Results” model prepared by the Public Library Association of theAmerican Library Association ¹

Community Planning Committee

The process includes the creation of a community advisory group, comprised of community members and library staff, who respond to community needs assessment information and provide a “vision” of the needs of San Francisco and how the Library might address those needs through “service responses” outlined in the planning process.

Staff Focus Group

A group of library employees from various classifications and work sites reviews the Community Planning Committee work and provides feedback with its own interpretation of the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for the Library’s services responses to the community.

Goals, Objectives, Activities

After review of the proposed services responses by the Library Commission, detailed activities are then developed by staff for implementation over the next three years.

Final Plan

Approved October 2, 2003 by the San Francisco Public Library Commission.
