Learner Accomplishments

Tutor Ted Bamberger reports that his learner Claudia Corletto has made significant improvements in her writing skills. Ted notes that she is now self-correcting the misspelled words as she proofreads her journal writing. One technique that helps Claudia in the proofreading process is to first read out loud what she has written. The tutor-learner team has been working consistently on the goal of improving Claudia’s spelling skills since they were first matched in September 2006.

Samuel Warrior’s tutor Whitney Lewis tells us “Sam has been faithfully and diligently working on his phonics using the computer program Ultimate Phonics. Not only has he learned to sound out and read words that follow the phonics rules, but he also is reading “sight words” (that don’t follow the rules so much) and he’s doing so at an intermediate level. I’m so proud of his accomplishment – his hard work is paying off.” Samuel tells us “I feel excellent. I feel good. I can’t complain. I’ve been studying phonics on the computer and I’ve been putting letters together and making words on the writing board with my tutor.”

Dayana Salazar had a huge accomplishment this December, according to tutor Jason Siroonian. She passed the hardest course in her program at City College–microbiology. Now that this is over, Dayana is set to graduate after she picks up a couple of other credits this semester. This course is a notorious one and plagues many students. It’s often a make or break situation.

Dayana needed to achieve a B grade, and she did just that. Dayana worked really hard on her lab work, where she conducted many experiments, including correctly identifying bacteria using a series of tests, and she learned a vast quantity of scientific information. “As a result of all that she studied,” Jason reports, “I know more about DNA, and how microorganisms live, grow and replicate.” Jason notes, “Having no more than high school science, I can honestly say that she taught me a lot!”

“I’m very proud of Dayana,” Jason says. “The material that she had to read to succeed in this course was very challenging and densely written.”
