Project Read learner Norman “Stan” Martin passed away on February 9, 2008. Even though Stan was experiencing health issues and was in pain, he had recently reconnected with Project Read and began meeting with a new tutor. This tutor, Joe, was impressed with Stan’s wide range of interests, zest for life, and desire to deeply connect to and help others. Stan shared his love of spirituality and the power of the 12 step recovery process in his one-to-one encounters, volunteer work, and through radio talk shows (he was considered a celebrity caller on a KGO program). Stan was remembered by a fellow Project Read learner as a “serious minded guy who was unafraid to speak his mind.”
