Greetings to all Project Read students and volunteers!
I am thrilled to have been
given this exciting opportunity to work with all of you. I am looking forward
to doing all I can to support you, and to help strengthen Project Read
as we move into the next century.
I was actually born in San
Francisco. I left at a rather young age, spending most of my formative
years in Canada and Southern California. I have been working in the field
of adult literacy for approximately ten years; first as Literacy Coordinator
for the Riverside City and County Public Library, and later as coordinator
for the newly established Riverside County
Library System. I have also
served as President and Executive Board Member of the Southern California
Library Literacy Network (a regional network comprised of the 50 library
literacy programs from Santa Barbara to San Diego). I am a strong believer
in a learner-centered approach to literacy instruction. When we ask the
students themselves what it is they want to learn, we are making them a
partner in the learning process. I think that this is what has made the
California Literacy Campaign programs unique and successful.
Over the next few weeks,
I hope to meet many of you. Please take the opportunity to drop by the
Project Read office and say hello when you visit the Main Library. -
