Would you ever consider…?
by Tyrone White
“Would you ever consider the death penalty an appropriate punishment for a person under the age of eighteen?” from Would You?: Questions to Challenge Your Beliefs, Evelyn McFarlane and James Saywell, Villard Books, New York, 2000.

In my opinion, there is something missing from some children’s lives when young people think their only alternative when having an unexpected pregnancy is to panic and discard or even kill the infant. There is something missing when young people feel that the only way to obtain the things they see advertised on television is to sell narcotics or commit robbery. There is something missing when young people feel the only answer to bullying or emotional abuse is to take a gun to school.
All young people need at least one responsible adult that they can go to with their problems, worries or things that are on their minds without fear of judgment or punishment and got responsible advice.
Children today are surrounded by violence. They see adults and countries using violence to solve problems. They see women and children terrorized on television every day. When children end up in jail or on death row, some of the blame belongs to society. Until society sets a strict moral example and provides the full attention they need, children should not be put on death row.
