Hi, my name is Verdell Price, Jr. For the last ten years of my life,
I haven’t been able to read very well. Then I came to Project Read.
I first learned about this problem from
my counselors at my recovery program. I told them that my life is going
to get better when I learn how to read, spell, and write. I have kids,
and my kids are going to come to me for help one day and I do not want
to tell them I cannot help because I don’t know how to read, spell or
write.
When I first came to the library, I met
Leon. He gave me the orientation about Project Read. He also said that
in order to overcome my disability, I must give 100% of myself.
Two weeks later, I met Heather. She gave
me some tests to see what my reading level was. She told me some things
about myself that I needed to know. She said I read too fast and that
I second guess myself.
Next, I met my tutor. We talked about
my reading and she let me know that she was going to help me meet my
goals. I must say she is doing a very good job because she will not
give me the answers. She makes me work for them. Sometimes I get mad
at her because she will not give me the answers, but she also lets me
know when I’m doing a very good job.
Just last week she gave me some homework—a list
of words to spell. I missed five out of 100 and that made me feel good
about coming to Project Read to work with my tutor.
