Ceremony 2001
International Literacy Day
September 7, 2001
Deborah Pardes of The SIBL Project Project Read, in sponsorship with BALit, KQED and The SIBL Project, hosted a celebration for International Literacy Day on September 7, 2001. The multi-program event presented workshops for learners and tutors, a buffet lunch, and an open forum at the Main Library. The program continued outside on the Civic Center Mall with a press conference and program exhibits, followed by a free outdoor concert featuring DJ collective SISTER and rocktronic band KINDNESS.
As part of the open air program, poet Al Young inspired the crowd with his artistry. KQED's Michael Krasny read a proclamation from Mayor Willie L. Brown making the day International Literacy Day in San Francisco.
The SIBL Project – Songs Inspired By Literature – supports adult literacy through its songwriting contest and benefit CD. This year's recipients are BALit and KQED's Education Network Adult Learning Project.
