The Pool Game
by Ray Brennan

the pool hall

When I was young I was a great pool player. One of my best nights was at the bar in Modesto lanes. I went to the bar last night to shoot pool. It went real well. I ran the table nine times. We were playing eight ball. I won nine drinks because I won so much.
Each person tries to shoot their seven balls and then the eight ball to win. I don’t do trick shots. What made me a good player was that I could see the angles of the balls in my head. I could see where the ball was going to go.
The bar was in a bowling alley and was real smoky. The noise was bad. The sound of the bowling pins falling down and the clinking of the glasses against each other and the bar were distracting. But it was okay. The people got mad at me as I continued to beat them and so, discouraged, they quit.
Jimmy Gonzalez was there and he was watching me shoot. Jimmy was a professional pool player. He told me the only thing that was wrong with my game was that I shoot too fast. If you shoot too fast, your game is not very good. It’s easy not to see the whole table, and you can make simple mistakes.
It was fun to win all those drinks back then, but today I’d take my winnings in cash, thank you very much.
