Dear Dr. Seuss
by John Caroompas

John was a finalist in the "Writer to Writer" contest for adult learners, sponsored by the California State Library. Participants wrote a letter to the author of a favorite book describing how the book impacted their lives. Here is John’s letter:

Dear Dr. Seuss,
You are my favorite author. Even though you’ve died, your books live on. Every time a new child opens one of your books it brings laughter and smiles from the words and the pictures on the pages. I too have always enjoyed reading your books and exploring your imaginary worlds.
When I was a child, I always enjoyed looking at your collection of books and learning to read a bit. I’ve always had good memories of the books and had fun reading them.
I am a preschool teacher at Little Star Preschool Too in San Francisco. I like reading your books, Dr. Seuss, to the children at my day care center. Learning new words and rhyming sounds is fun for them thanks to you. My preschoolers like to pretend they’re the teacher reading Dr. Seuss to the other children.
We are doing book appreciation and we are making Cat in the Hat headbands and we will be reading it along with Green Eggs and Ham. We’re going to discuss these stories in the class. Also, we’re having a cooking project of green eggs and ham.
I’m an adult with a reading disability. I started off reading Dr. Seuss when I began to learn how to read again. It was my first step. Your books taught me how to read better. I enjoyed reading again. Someday I would love to write my own books for children who have reading disabilities just like me.
Thank you for reading my letter.
               Sincerely,
               John Caroompas
