Month in the Life of Carlos Hernandez |

Last month I got my driver’s license. It wasn’t easy but I had help from
people who care. I got help from my tutor and my girlfriend. My girlfriend
read the book to me at night before going to bed. Every night we read
a little bit of the driver’s book for two weeks before I took my written
test. The test actually turned out to be a verbal test. What is a verbal test, you say? For the verbal test, you sit down at the DMV and they give you a tape recorder and headphones that read the test to you if you have problems reading. They give you a sheet of paper and you mark down your answer—A, B, C, or D. After you’re done with your test, you hand it in for grading. You will know in ten minutes’ time if you passed or failed. And eventually I passed, or I wouldn’t be writing this story. I made an appointment for a week later to take my driver’s test. But, before you take your driver’s test, you must learn how to drive. You should drive around for a couple of weeks with somebody who has a license. That is the only time you can drive. Plus, when I took my driver’s test, I drove around for about an hour before, so that I wouldn’t make any mistakes. I ended up passing my driver’s test on my first time around, and I got my driver’s license. The whole moral of the story is I never thought I would ever have a driver’s license because I couldn’t read. I went to Project Read and got help. They helped me with a tutor and now I read with the help of loved ones and my tutor. So don’t be scared to ask for help if you really think you need it, and I’m happy I achieved something I never thought I would have. |
