Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. was the special guest speaker at our Tutor & Adult Learner Recognition Celebration on June 27th. The mayor commended San Franciscans for placing our city at the forefront of volunteerism in the United States. He also said Project Read is making San Francisco a better place, which is making elected officials happy, but which makes adult learners the happiest of all.
Our MCs this year were Mark Day and Vedell Robinson. Tutoring pairs Chemista Jacobs and Herman Bracey, Alice Triplett and Madeline McQuillan, Susan Zoya and Mario St. Rose, and Harvey Hall, Jr. and Jon Keasey gave recognition to the efforts of their partners is making the tutoring process an enriching experience. Project Read Manager Randy Weaver opened the microphone to anyone who wished to speak which prompted learners Anthony Shedd, Glenn Bray, Carlos Soto and Chemista Jacobs to get up and tell of the changes in their lives since they chose to improve their reading skills by coming to Project Read.
Project Read gave awards to tutors for milestones in volunteer service. Receiving the award for 15 years of service was Janet Geraty, who began shortly after Project Read opened its doors in 1983. Recipients of the award for 5 years of service were: Suzanne Foley, Mark Markowitz, Tia Mercury, Daniel Phillips, Ginne Ryan, Josh Schein and Erin Wipff. In addition, tutor contacts were thanked for their efforts in supporting Project Read through their monthly phone calls to collect reports from tutors.
