Inspiring Quilts by Wonderful Wright

I would like to start by saying thank you to my tutor, Mary, who took me to the de Young Museum. We went to see an exhibit of quilts made by different Black women from Gee’s Bend in Alabama.

I thought it was the most beautiful thing in the world because it reminded me that Black women had to survive by keeping their families warm and maybe their minds at peace.

And then I thought about when I was working downtown in the Financial District I had made a quilt. I called it the Ghetto Quilt. The pieces came from the garbage cans of the garment factories. I didn’t finish the backing, but this has given me the inspiration to do the backing on my quilt.

I got pieces and made me a quilt. Here it is. And thank you Project Read for letting me show you my creation. Please go to the deYoung to see the Quilts of Gee’s Bend before December 31, 2006.
