Arrell Bates was a learner with Project Read since 1999. Always quick with a smile and a kind word, he worked diligently to perfect his reading and writing skills. A fine cook, he contributed wonderful sweet potato pies to Project Read potlucks. Arrell passed away in January 2001, but will not be forgotten by those who knew him.

Mary Harrington tutored eight adult learners since she began in 1984. In 1999 she volunteered as a tutor contact until she retired in May 2000. Mary succumbed to cancer in November 2000. The time and energy she spent assisting Project Read was invaluable, and we miss her greatly.

Catherine Jackson was a Project Read learner on and off since 1995 until she passed away last December. Catherine was a kind, gentle woman who cared about others. She is greatly missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Harry Stern was a tutor at Project Read for over 10 years before his death in October 2000. Harry worked with several Project Read learners and also tutored in San Francisco County Jail #8. He was a genuinely nice man and was always is good spirits. He will be remembered.
