Assistive technology, including the equipment and software in the AV rooms and study rooms, is made available
so that people with disabilities can use San Francisco Public Library resources. This extends to searching the catalog and other
library-related databases as well as the Internet, using Word to produce documents, scanning text so that it can be used in conjunction
with a screen reader and / or reading programs such as Kurzweil 3000, WYNN, Open Book, etc.

The Library will not provide support for:
- designing and / or maintaining Web sites
- using e-mail
- saving large files
- image scanning and editing
(No image editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Corel Photopaint are installed on any public machines)
Data should be saved only onto a floppy disk.
- No data should be saved onto the hard drive. Floppy disks are available for purchase in the Book Bay store, near the Grove Street entrance.
- Library machines have virus detecting software that is updated on a regular basis.
- Software resets each machine back to their original settings at the end of each
user session.
- The Library is not responsible for any loss of data or damage to files or floppy disks.
The Library does not accept donations of equipment or software.
- Users are invited to write suggestions for new adaptive software. Please fill out an
SFPL Suggestions & Comments form and address it to the attention of the Access Services Manager. Forms are
available at public service desks.
Computer-based assistive technology in the AV rooms and study rooms is reserved for people with disabilities
who are registered to use it.
- Users must have a valid San Francisco Public Library card.
- New users must be added to a list of registered users.
In order to be added to the list, people with disabilities may call the Learning Differences Librarian at 557-4540
or the Access Services Manager at 557-4557 to schedule a user interview.
Registered users may use assistive technology workstations in the AV rooms and study rooms for two hours per day.
- A maximum of 2 users may be at a workstation at the same time.
Misuse of equipment, damage to equipment, or disruption of library service can result in a person being banned from using the Library’s adaptive equipment.
