Harvey Milk: Private Life/Public Life
Exhibit at San Francisco Main Library explores his life from childhood to his time serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors
With the 30th anniversary of his assassination at San Francisco City Hall coming up next week, a timely exhibit showcases the life of Harvey Milk. Made up of original photographs, personal letters, documents and political memorabilia, Harvey Milk: Private Life/Public Life is on display through Jan. 10 at the
Main Library, Third Floor, James C. Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center and Sixth Floor, San Francisco History Center, 100 Larkin St., San Francisco.
Highlights of the exhibit include childhood pictures, love letters, candid snapshots and political papers as well as photographs taken by Milk himself, of his friends and lovers. The exhibit is based on materials from the Harvey Milk/Scott Smith archival collection which is part of the Gay & Lesbian Archives of the library’s San Francisco History Center.
The exhibit showcases the History Center’s remarkable collection of Milk’s personal and political materials which are fully processed and open to the public. This unique collection was donated to the library following the death of Milk’s partner Scott Smith in 1995 by Smith’s mother, Elva Smith.
