During construction of the new library, the Ortega Temporary Services Site (Mini-Ortega) is open at the same location with regular branch days and hours.
In November 2000, the voters passed a bond measure for $106 million to upgrade San Francisco’s branch library system and in November 2007, the voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition D authorizing additional funding to improve the branches. Because of the increased service needs from adjacent schools, the desire to make the branch more visible, the community support for a new branch, and the difficulty meeting the service needs with a renovation, the Library is building a new Ortega Branch Library, rather than renovate the existing branch.

The Ortega Branch has CLOSED for construction of the new branch.
![]() Ortega Branch Library - San Francisco Bureau of Architecture The design places the new building closer to Ortega St. and includes a large reading area, distinct Children’s and Teen spaces, and a Program Room with after hour’s community access. Other highlights include a study room, views of the ocean, maximum use of natural light, public art, and new furniture, shelving, and materials displays. The branch is scheduled to close for construction in summer 2009 and will re-open in late 2010. During construction, library services will be provided by holding programs at neighborhood schools and community centers and by bookmobile service. Closing may be delayed due to design issues, complications arising from the bidding, contracting or permit process, or other matters. The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library are raising funds from private donations for new furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the branch library.
