Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial Branch Library was the
second branch established in the San Francisco Public
Library system. The first branch building was opened January
2, 1902, and was named the McCreery Branch in honor of Andrew
McCreery, who donated the land and paid for the construction
of the building. Damaged in the Daly City Earthquake of 1957,
this building was demolished and the site used for construction
of the present-day building. Designed by the architectural firm
of Appleton & Wolford and costing $192,335, the new branch
building was opened to the public on December 20, 1961, and was
formally dedicated on January 22, 1962.
In 1981 the Library Commission officially changed the name of
the branch to Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial Branch Library
to honor the slain Supervisor.
